A Modern Bathroom’s Heated Floors

In this renovation (which you can view here) we installed Schluter DITRA-HEAT. From Schluter, ‘Combine the beauty and durability of tile with the comfort of an electric floor warming system to bring a touch of luxury into any room of the home. DITRA-HEAT is an electric floor warming system that directly incorporates uncoupling technology to ensure that floors aren't susceptible to cracked tiles and grout. Cables can be placed wherever heat is desired for customized heating zones.’

What Are The Benefits of Heated Floors?

The primary purpose of heated floors in a bathroom is to eliminate the initial ’cold shock’ of stepping onto tile, providing luxurious, even warmth underfoot. Additionally, the radiant heat dries wet bathroom floors much faster, reducing slip hazards, condensation, and the potential for mold or mildew growth. Contrary to popular belief, tile and grout are not waterproof, and moisture can penetrate a tiled floor assembly. DITRA-HEAT membranes feature a polypropylene waterproofing layer that helps to protect the subfloor from any moisture that may be present in the tile assembly. This is especially important for bathroom applications.

Even more, the heat isn’t relegated to the floor alone. Unlike traditional forced-air HVAC vents, radiant heat does not blow air around. This eliminates the circulation of dust and allergens, which is ideal for allergy sufferers.
